Advanced Placement Biology -

What you should plan to do in this course:

Read the material for each class before coming to class.

Come to every class and take notes from lectures and other presentations.

If an absence causes you to miss a scheduled quiz or exam, you must be ready to make it up the day you get back to school.   Makeup work is always done after school, not during regular class.

Be sure your in-class behavior enhances your learning and that of those around you. Talk to your classmates before class. Exchange names and phone numbers. Do not, however, talk to your classmates after class has started unless it is necessary to ask a question about the material. If the whispers of others bother you, ask them to be quiet. If you must arrive after the beginning of class or leave before the end, sit very near the door.

Ask questions in class if there is material that confuses you.

Study notes from class and any notations you have made from the book daily. A good rule of thumb is two hours of study for each hour of class.

Be sure that each new bit of information is integrated, attached, connected to other information you have learned in the course. For any single bit of information in your notes, you should be able to think of three other places in the course where it relates.

Study with others. If you just talk about the material, you will learn more. Form a study group and meet often (not just before a test) to compare notes.

Understand that there are many levels of "knowing." You may completely "know" the material in the sense that you could recite it back, but not be able to use the material to evaluate or predict or analyze. It is this more complex type of knowing that will be important on the tests.

Check out web sites that correlate to this class. Search under "AP Biology" on the Web. Take advantage of any other out-of-class resources recommended.

Behave honorably and expect others to do so as well. Cheaters only lose in the long run.
